The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is bringing profound changes to international dispute resolution, including the field of arbitration. Debates have emerged as to whether AI should remain merely a tool assisting arbitrators in their administrative work, or whether it could evolve further to become a tribunal secretary in the future. Some organizations have even planned to develop specialized AI systems designed to support or simulate the functions of tribunal secretaries. This gives rise to a number of important legal and ethical questions: Should arbitral awards substantially assisted by AI be recognized as legally valid? Where should the line be drawn between technological assistance and human decision-making authority?
Against this backdrop, the Rountable on “Emerging Trends as to the Regulation of the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Arbitration” is organized to provide a forum for discussing emerging developments relating to the use and regulation of AI in international arbitration.
